Hi there - you have a qualified metallurgist on board here so guess I need to sort you arguing people out.

You are all right in a way. To get rid of the surface corrosion it is undoubtably best to strip the metal back to bare and/or cut it out if you can. There are also some strong oxidizing agents like rustmaster that do indeed colour the surface black forming a protective coat. All areas I have treated with this stuff on my T25 panel van have slowed the rot enormously. The question is more to what lengths you want to cut the rust down and for how long and how accessible an how serious the problem is

As to tea well it is full of antioxidant and tannin - however whilst it might make some difference I dont think its a long term solution. Better to drink it perhaps when hot and decide on a choice of better action.

The purist answer is to cut it out for sure but that easier said than done sometimes as we all know. Best way of all to keep the rot down is do what I do - have a dehumidifier in your atlantic - and feel happy as the cost is partly justified by giving you deionised water, the van feels dry and stops the condenstion building from th inside which is a killer on a steel hull. Oh and the steps - check the seal on the front window as it invariably starts the issue by dribbling down behind the dashboard

That should clear that up anyhow!

oh and 68 - cant you use a symbol that is not as completely distracting as that `pair` as I lost my tracks twice on the reply looking at `them` on the screen.

Agree on all of the above. I guess if I was aiming to eradicate rust from seams, I'd be sandblasting them out - or at least something abrasive to remove every trace of rust first. Rust treaments do only slow down rust thats for certain and for the vast majority of us, thats as much as we'll be able to do but some treatments are better than others thats all. Vactan is still worth using though.

For those who moved from bugs to vans, they will be OH so familiar with the condensation problem in bug heater channels that ultimately eats the very strength out of beetles. I remember considering glavanising a new pair before replacing rotten ones but that then creates a whole new load of problems in terms of getting a good weld and when all is said and done, rust will get in somewhere - no matter what you do. Steel just loves to revert to that crunchy orange mess.

In the end, it will be down to money and heck, just how much is a T25 worth??? I remember talking to Frank (Frank's Bus Parts) down in Walton one evening and as he rightly pointed out, no matter how much enthusiasm we have, we all end up seeing our wagons eaten away. If not in chunks, at the very least by stealth. I shifted from type 2's because of the ourigger worm and anyone who has ever owned one will tell you it pays to learn to weld.

For all that, nothing lasts forever. Just enjoy them while you can.

If that's the case then I think the Scottish meet should take place in Cromarty, lovely scenery up there

back to the question of does anyone know of a place in the North west? (even though keiths signiture is worth a mention :P )

i had a serious case of seamk rot and Simon at "SJS Campers" (01704505202) in Southport removed as much metal as he could without taking every panel off, used a wedge of some description to really get into the seams he didn't remove to get at the rust, removed all the sealer on other seams, rot or not, treated everything with rust preventative tackle and then re applied the seam seals and sent it away for a total re-spray. very happy with the finish, he does a good job and to the budget you tell him you've got..

give him a try, you may struggle to get in before the summer season, but you never know your luck.

Cheers for that Brad, went up to see Steph at M A C the other day and was very impressed with what he had to say, 2 to 3 months wait to get anything done unfortunately, then off the road for about a month whilst its all done (inc complete respray)
So am going to wait till the end of the season, then get everything done in one fell swoop :D

Thanx for all your input :)

And if anyone is interested my avatar can be rented out for birthdays barmitzvahs etc 8)
