I have a 1982 camper 2.0l ,engine code CU.It has twin Solex carbs but I think that the one on the offside is playing up.

The symptoms are that the engine is missing so the first thing I did was change the sparkplugs and leads for new ones. (it has electronic ign.)

The problem was still there so I swapped the dizzy cap rotor arm and coil with used but working replacements and the problem was still there. the plugs are getting a spark

I then thought it might be a fuel problem cos when I took the plug out of no2 cyl it was stone cold and lacking the smell of petrol then I put my hand on the cylinders and found that they were both cold and the two on the nearside were hot.

Took off the suspect carb from the manifold and gave it a good clean with carb cleaner checked the diaphragms as well, put the carb back on and its still missing bad but ther seems to be some heat being generated on the offside of the engine which suggests that some fuel is getting thru
I also checked the inlet manifold by removing it and re-seating it with gasket compound

I then cleaned it again but there was no difference and have now come up against a brick wall as to what to do next.....any suggestions ??

Is the float bowl of the carb filling up?
If not there is a fuel blockage to the carb.

Did youtake the top off the carb and see if there was any crap floating around in there?
Something may have lodged in the jets.

You said the engine was cold on that side before you cleaned the carb then generated some heat afterwards. If so you made some difference and I suspect it is just a blockage.

The most common fault on these carbs is the fuel cut off solenoid on the side of the carb, verify its function by unscrewing it and testing it on a battery, it should click very loudly and also shine a torch at 90 degrees to it at the end you should be able to see the pin move. Get a replacement if it is found to be faulty and as a very temporary measure you can cut off the end to get you going if its your daily, but only as a temporary fix.
If you still suspect blocked jets then once the cut off valve is removed a good blast of compressed air down the hole will clear all of the jets and crevasses in one hit.

There is fuel getting to the carb as the float chamber was full .I also took the fuel pipe off and cranked it over and lots of fuel came through.

I checked the cut off valve and it was ok but as you said some improvement in the heat probably suggests that I have partially cured the blockage.

I forgot to mention that when I squirt easy start in to the carb whilst revving , the engine responds well and the revs increase which would back up the blockage theory

Hooray its running fine. I stripped the carb to the bare bones, cleaned every orofice with carb cleaner and then compressed air paying special attention to the main jet(I think) at the bottom of the float chamber (I missed this one earlier).
This was pretty clogged up, reassembled it and woosh,running like a Rolex

When I get time I will clean out the other carb as this must be due to clog up by now.
