Three pin VW bellhousing timing wire 2.1

I have heard this was used by VW for accurate finding of TDC can any one tell me how it works?

It was used in conjunction with VW1313, which was a magic (expensive) little machine. I've been stopped by the plod, driving an Audi 100 up the Warwick bypass with one taped onto the bonnet. It had a missfire at 90!!!!

Ohms/resistance??
And are the pins numbered???
Same for the CU ??

yes, its a simple off/on/off reading......
dont know what the third pin is for, laurie sounds like he does!
