Diesel starting problems

Post by Hdickins »

My 1.6TD is having difficulties. It turns over ok and I think the glow-plugs are ok too (it normally starts on the button - and they wouldn't have all gone bad so suddenly right?) The feed to the glowplugs seems ok too - fuse is ok too. I've checked the magnetic fuel cut-off and that clicks ok - and the feed is ok too.

So what else could it be? I suspect a fuel supply problem - as though no fuel is even getting to the injector pump - but why would that happen?

Is there a separate fuel pump (other than the injector pump itself?)

What do I look for next???

:(

So, what's the best way for checking for air in the system?

It does seem a likely explanation...

loosen the nut on one of the injection pipes - only undo slightly and then try turning it over - if you get diesel coming out then good, try it with the other 3 and see what happens

I think there is a screw on top of the filter housing - undo this a bit first BEFORE you try the injector pipes come to think of it. Helps push air out of the system and costs nought to try :D

Well, it seems it is a fuel problem. The fuel in the pipe seems to be draining back down to the tank.

Why would it do that? An air leak maybe?
What's the easiest way of priming the system?

Just a quick update:

The casue of my problems was a missing seal on the fuel filter. (It's been missing since the last service - nearly a year ago; but only failed just recently.)

So... Thanks for the help everyone!
