Please help me.....:-)

Post by Jay »

Hi all, picked up my 1980 van today and wondered if anyone could help me with a few things

1. The previous owner has fitted a 2L Aircooled engine from a variant in place of the original 1600, is there any way of finding out which engine this is so I can order the correct parts?

2. Wheres a good place to order parts from (somewhere cheap  )

3. Can the Aircooled engines run on unleaded

4. The engine, which looks a bit knackered but I'm assured is a runner, hasnt been run for a while and I can't get it started (I've only tried for about 15mins so far). It will run on Easystart and has a fuel supply, I've heard that the carbs has a limited life?? Is there anything else that I should look at first??

5. Are there any good manuals out there?? I've just ordered the workshop manual from ebay..any good??

Thanks for any help........want to get it ready for the summer season :D 8)

1) Think there is some advice on identifying engines on the Wiki
2)GSF, Just Kampers, Euro Parts,
3) Yes
4) Someone else here will be more knowledgeable on that

Best of luck with your new van.

agree with Mocki.. rubbish/water int he carbs etc..

and it wont have been from a variant as such.. prob a type 4 (411/412) so is prob a 1.7 or 1.8L.. they never got the 2L.. Some parts are different.. like exhaust heat exchangers, the cooling tin will be very different too and this must all be there and the top engine bay sealed from the lower half.. by making a flange and foeam gasket around the engine bay..

Will be a good performer if set up..
Not got a single webber carb mounted in the middle has it? and the bus is bright green and you are on the IoM???

you can expect something that looks rough to actually work if it hasnt had much done to it.. you need to start with the basics.. is there fuel getting through? prob not by the sounds of it!!

Put a couple of pics of the engine bay on here.. we should be able to identify it better..

Must all the tin be fitted?? What hapens if its not...as far as I can remember its just got the tin around the cylinders.
What do you mean about sealing the top from the bottom...when I look in the engine bay there just an engine in a big hole...I can see right through to the floor???

Its an air cooled engine.. you cannot cool a hot engine with hot air.. so you need to make sure the top (cold) is physically seperated from the lower (hot) area.. or all you will do is cook your engine by circulatin hot air!!

I did a 1.7 411 engine into a 1980 1600CT bus.. went real well, but the gap filling took a little time and patience.. I will dig out some pics of what I did..

Yuo can see around the egde of the bay I fitted some Alu angle cut and shaped to be as close to the engine tin as poss.. (5mm) then fitted a "baywindow" foam engine seal with a bit of the original CT engine seal for the "front" tin..

It worked perfectly...

if you find the motor code its by the oblong raised breather box in the middle of the engine near the front obove plastic fan grill,it goes CA=1.7 AP=1.8 CT-1.6 CJ=2.0 CU=2.0 and then theirs weird usa variants,cj.
