Running a Pierberg 2e3 carb on my 1986 Transporter.... err! I guess.... cos it's standard equipment.
What's the correct or factory setting for the mixture screw? And is it turned clockwise or anticlockwise to lean out the mixture? Also what amount of adjustment should I change each time before running and checking I'm not running too lean?

you should really be using a 2 gas or better a 4 gas machine to set your fuel mixture.

set it at service, drive, recheck and that should be it till next service. if it going out of tune frequently then the carb is probally worn.

years ago we used to set by ear by turning the mixture screw clockwise (in) untill the engine went to run poorly, then unscrew (anticlockwise) slowly and you should notice the engine start to pick up speed do this un till you notice the engine start to slow.

then stop and turn screw (clockwise) 1/4 of a turn.























then put your head between your legs and kiss your a*** goodbye.

Hi Lee,
thanks for the info.
I'm trying to lean her off just a tad as I believe she's running on the rich side.
I've recently checked the air filter and it still looks new.
Today I turned the screw anticlockwise from (if looking at a clockface) 5 pm to 3pm. But then couldn't decide which way is leaner.
Is it clockwise or anticlockwise to lean off?

should be clockwise (in) to lean off. its been a long time since i messed with one of these carbs.

is it the one with the large (air idle) screw and the little (mixture)screw just beneath it .
if it is make sure it is the mixture screw you are turning.

Of course you realise, that all you are adjusting is the idle mixture? as soon as you go off idle the main jets take over, these are generally fixed sizes, so to adjust the actual 'running' mixture you would need to change one of more of these fixed jets.
Now I'm no Pierburg expert although I can remember working on the 2E2 in the Golfs etc when I was a VAG techniciam.
Most carburettors work this way, apart from the tapper need SU and Strombergs, of old, where you could raise or lower the main needle height for some running mixture control.

Hi Lee & Red Westie,
All taken on board and thanks for the info.
I was or am trying to reduce the petrol to air ratio at idle. It seems a bit too rich and very smelly at idle!
I guess this is for an expert or tuning shop to solve :?

very simple job if you have the equipment if you prepare everything so access is simple then it shouldn`t cost you more than £5 poss £10 at a friendly garage or mot station.
