you should really be using a 2 gas or better a 4 gas machine to set your fuel mixture.
set it at service, drive, recheck and that should be it till next service. if it going out of tune frequently then the carb is probally worn.
years ago we used to set by ear by turning the mixture screw clockwise (in) untill the engine went to run poorly, then unscrew (anticlockwise) slowly and you should notice the engine start to pick up speed do this un till you notice the engine start to slow.
then stop and turn screw (clockwise) 1/4 of a turn.
then put your head between your legs and kiss your a*** goodbye.
