Bubbly oil question...

Post by VWCamperfan »

Just a quick one.

Changed my reversing light switch on gearbox and noticed a bubbly foam on switch when I took the old one out.
Never had any problems with gearbox but is this normal after sitting for about 4 hours? Thought the oil would look like oil not an aero bar!
I'll change it if this sounds suspicious.

Thanks.
Mark.

Might be a good idea to change the oil ... give Aidan a quick ring .... he reccomends 4 litres of GL4 80-90 for the 5 speed wasserbox gearboxes though

Cheers Ian, I'll give him a call tomorrow.
Mines the 4 speed box, don't know if this makes any difference but I'm sure Aidan can enlighten me!

Four or five-speed gearboxes hold the same type of oil. Gl4 80-90 will do nicely. My 5-speed takes about 3,5 liters. The 4-speed takes a bit more to top up I think? Use a funnel and a hose. Put that hose through the enginebay and fill the gearbox. Helps keeping your garage clean.

put the oil container in a bucket of hot water for 20 mins before trying to fill the gearbox with a funnel and hose, as said above, makesit loads quicker, as the oil is thinner and runs better.....
