Post by acerimmer5 »

Hi - current engine i am advised has passed on to the "great engineer in the sky" - however i have a spare and some of the gents on here suggested i give it a go myself and on reflection thats not a bad idea - however is there a guide around that will spoon feed me through it - ive got the haynes and the bentley which has been great when ive done simple tasks like distributor / plugs /carb / electrics in van but looks a daunting task re the engine - have traweled the forums but no luck so far - thanks - john - t25 1.9 petrol auto 1984

When you have the required bits its a simple bolt in job and no more wishing it could hold a decent speed on a hill.

drop the engine and box together , for the sake of a few more bolts and ten minutes etc time , it will be easier for you to mate the two back up and slot back in ,

i've never done an auto (yet) , but many a manual ... it really easy , it takes longer to get all the gubbins off than it does to drop it out ,,,

3x2 is the answer. The whole box doesn't need to come out but you need to make sure the torque converter doesn't drop out and you need to be able to have engine and box at an angle to allowe the complete engine to come out.
So. Disconnect hoses, wires and cables. Undo the 2 bottom bell housing bolts (All this with the van on SAFE axle stands and using a DECENT sized jack) I'll remind you now that is isn't long since I had bruising from hip to shoulder because I was careless with axle stands! Remove the tins from around the bottom of the chassis
There are 3 bolts holding the drive plate to the torque converter. These can be seen when you remove the plastic plug at the rear of the engine and turn it over until they appear.
2 short pieces of 3x2 stuffed into the rear axle shells on the outside of the shafts.
Then undo the 4 13mm bolts on the mounting bar and lower the engine until everything is resting nicely on the bits of 3x2. Then the top bolts.
I remove the pressure tank and the engine slides out nicely.
You need to put a screwdrive into the hole in the gearbox to secure the torque converter or thread some wire through.
I've probably missed something but that's the general direction.

You've got six hours to do it in :)

Laurie , your right you dont have to drop the box ,and i i was doing it, i wouldnt , but for ease of mating it back up , having it out makes life a tad more pleasant :D

6 hours , come on about 3

oh and if you havent done it before , mark up / take pictures of where all the wires go
