where to get a vw replacement engine 1900 petrol

Post by acerimmer5 »

Hi some of you may have read my problems with pushrod/core plug - thanks to the people who replied regarding my problem - the end concensus appears that the engine is screwed so now i have a dilema - i have a spare engine which have been quoted will cost me around 350 to install - that i suspect is without the cost of a new exhaust system - OR do i bite the bullet and go for a recon/new vw supplied engine which will cost me around a grand - my dilema is (a) finding the money and thats my concern - (b) is the cheap fix in fitting the spare i already have which i know runs ok because it used to be my previous mechanics but would obviously have same wear/age problems that could manifest at any time - (c) the van incidently cost me nothing (my sister had it for years before she became ill) (d) can i get an engine from a reputable supplier along with a new exhaust because i doubt if the old one could be changed over along with a new petrol tank which i need all for around 1200 (e) WHAT SUPPLIERS HAVE A VW1900 PETROL ENGINE or can i put a diesel unit in and at what extra cost - sorry for the long post as sobbing into my beer as i write - regards - john

As far as I am aware new WBX engines are no longer available. :(

Suppliers of recon engines: Elite VW, VEGE & Remtech. There are a number of 80-90ers who have used Elite & they seem to be reasonably priced. VEGE probably a bit more expensive with Remtech the dearest but I havn't heard anything about them for a long time. :)

Hi ace....

some members have ordered the engine from Elite....had it sent to steve at gasure who fitted it. We have one eltie engine....been fine....my van is with them at the moment having a 2.1 installed.

Just one way round your problems

or...

If you can get to elite in Basildon (bit of a way to go) they will fit for free. Are you with the AA....break down "on route" and they recover to elite for you??

That is a heck of allot to install a like for like motor !!

iirc it only takes half a day and many on here would consider it a "do it yourself" job - I know I would.

Perhaps you could do it your self with help from a mechanically minded soul from on here if any are near to you.

My mate in Chester swaps engines on his type 2 just for fun whenever he fancies a change !! ( not that different a job on our T25's )

If you don't want to get your hands mucky I strongly recommend you speak to Steve at Gasure ( see my sig ) - although he is up here in Chester, it is not too far to get a van to ( I trailered a friends poorly Saab up here from Cardiff not long ago ) and he will give you the best advice and service you will find in our area.

Re different motors.

Fitting a diesel is a big job, requiring replacing engine bay cross members etc - and then you finish up with, well, a Diesel

I have heard ( I think ) that the likes of Gasure can fit a Scooby motor for the same (ish) price as a decent re-conned standard motor :)

Re-conned motors are often a bit of a gambol, only buy from an outfit that you KNOW has satisfied VW flat four customers and stick rigidly to the service schedule requirements etc or you will lose any warranty !!

Re exhausts, if money is tight, one of those cheap "Empi" jobs will do the job for a year or two before they fall apart, longer if you rub it down and re-paint it up with some decent exhaust paint. Plus they sound OK if you like that kind of thing !!

Lastly, remember, some bits of your old motor will be of value to some one on here :) = "£100 spares or repair"
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

replacement engine

Ace , go for the spare engine if you`re happy it is a goer ,get your hands dirty , get help, save a lotamunny . My dg 1.9 is still going fine  , but if it packed up (sorry , when) I would definitely go for a replacement from elite , who inspire some confidence on the phone and on this forum , with a new stainless exhaust and a gasure lpg conversion ---seems crazy not doing all of that , once you start -- probably a new clutch , too , and the whole lot would come to around £2500.
That would all have to happen if my present engine packs up ; in your position , if money is tight , i would still go for the spare , but check the clutch , and put stainless bolts on the exhaust clamps , and certainly spares or repair the creamed engine . jay

ummmm spare engine.....unless you can get £100 jsut for the block...send it to elite if you have yours done. They are taking a cream-crackerd engine off me....I have stripped all ancillaries, so its just the block, and they will take another £100 off the bill! (that cream crackered engine is essentially paying for the 1.9 to 2.1 upgrade)
