Starter motor disengages to quickly when engine cold?

Post by ringo »

Has anyone had this problem before?

I turn the key and the engine turns over briefly, then the starter motor makes a funny whirring noise and disengages. It can do this several times before i can start the motor.

Funny, it never has a problem when the engine is warm.

Its a diesel btw :)

Any ideas?

Sounds like ring gear on flywheel slipping. May not do it when warm due to expansion and a better grip.

Can you put a normal T3 starter on a 1Y or does something need modifying to make it work? If it happens alot it sounds like missmatched parts.

Does the engine start properly without missfires? IE are the heaterplugs alright? I find sometimes if a couple aren't working properly the engine struggles to start but sometimes fires well enough to kick it off the starter motor (My landys doing this sometimes at the moment as some plugs have failed). When all the plugs are working properly (and cold start leaver used) or the engine is warm it'd fire and run from the first compression so this wouldn't be an issue then - a thort at least, even if its not the problem its worth remembering that the cold start and heaterplugs are there to save the starter ware so always worth keeping tiptop (says he who can't be bothered getting some plugs for his motor).

Right, new starter motor in now and it fires up brilliantly.

The old starter was faulty (even though it was only 9 months old) as this one starts with so much more power its incredible.

Lets hope this one last longer.

Ringo.

PS, the fittings on my 1Y are off the old engine (flywheel and gearbox) so nothing should be different. However, it doesnt like starting too well and i've just changed the glow plugs. I reckon im going to have to wire in the cold start lever......

eyup ducks, ringo i make the missus use the cold start lever, her 1.9n/a starts a lot easier with it,and is smooth straight away rather than the 30 seconds of cold lumpy tick over, with squeely fan belts etc.so i insist she uses it,now if i could only get her to change gear correctly in a morning we will all be happy!!!!,also had the same problem with the starter last year, broke down in tesco when i was driving it!!!!.turned out to be the big power cable from the solly to the main starter, that had burnt completely threw, couldnt afford the £100 for a recon so i worked a lil'oldiguana magic....up the holdsworth villa posse
