Mk 3 golf L plate?

Am I correct in assuming a mk 3 golf L reg would have a 1y engine? and it would be a relatively straight forward job to replace my 1.6 na diesel with,
Advice gratefully received as it may not be available for long :(

could be 1Y or AAZ or 1Z

If it has no turbo its a 1Y
