My engine has overheated!

Multivan 1.6Td

Help me please as I no nothing about Mechanics!

I have just gone out in the Van when the Battery light (on dash) came on & the Rev counter stopped working!
I was only 2 miles away from home so turned around & drove back, as I was doing this the Temp Guage rose & the warning light started flashing!

The Van was driving fine & engine sounded O.k but when I got home I noticed steam pouring out of the engine bay

Have had a look & found

1. I appear to have lost a Fan belt? (bottom one)

2. The steam was coming from the gasket where water pipe connects to engine behind the Head (is this the thermostat as it has an electrical connection on it aswell) in the centre of the picture!

3. I can hear the coolant boiling but it dosn't seem to be leaking anywhere else!

Do you think that the engine will be knackered or will it be a case of replacing the gasket, fanbelt & coolant and all will be o.k?

(The Engine did still sound & drive o.k)

Can anyone Identify what parts I will need
& can anyone help me fix it as i really am crap!

I am in Grendon Underwood near Aylesbury Bucks!

You may be lucky as you didn`t drive to far with it boiling up.

Warning lights are there for a reason mate !!

That fitting on the back of the head is the take-off to the heater, so replace that gasket. It`s not the thermostat.
The water will have boiled up into the rear overflow tank behind the numberplate flap, but when it cools down again it will suck the water back. It will have filled that tank, which then overflows onto the rear silencer, hence the steam drama

Once you`ve done that gasket you`ll need to refill the water system with antifreeze mix (30%) and then bleed the system of air from the radiator bleed screw (have a search, it`s been done a million times)

If you`re lucky you won`t have done any lasting damage, if you`re unlucky expect head gasket problems and worse.

The moral of the story, if you`re warning lights come on, stop and find out why, it may just save you untold hassle and expense

Anyone know the best place to get the gasket & fanbelt from & part numbers?

I have been looking online & there are several fanbelts listed
(I'm not sure what one to get?)

And I cant find the Heater take off gasket listed any where!
Can I just get some gasket paper & make my own one?

Just had another look at your foto, that water outlet is the late type plastic one, so it has an O ring instead of a gasket, you will probably get away with re-sealing it with a smear of silicone sealant. Don`t over-tighten it or you`ll crack the plastic

I`ll check the belt lengths tomorrow on mine, there are a load of different ones listed on Etka so it`s a minefield to get the correct ones, JK lists the wrong ones, I presume you have power steering fitted, but NOT air-con?

As far as I am aware It dosent have Power steering!(certainly dosent feel like it when parking

& no aircon either!

Have had a better look today!

There is no Oil in the water or even water in the oil!
So that looks promising!

Have taken off, the Heater Take off & it looks like it had previously melted & someone had bodged a repair with half a tube of Silicone!

The o'ring looked O.k

So I want/need to replace it with a new one !

Any one have one kicking about they would like to sell me?

Am I right in thinking that the Belt that snapped runs the Water pump as well? & that is why it overheated

Hi (tires were great BTW!!) Yes, that belt runs the water pump. I wouldn't fit a used plastic housing unless its obselete due to the likeliness that its distorted. Try VW, see what the price is like.

Glad that the Tyres were O.k!

I will replace the O'ring, It isn't in the Pictures that is just some of the Silicone!

water pump belt 9.5 x 643

Cant look at/order parts on line & the Local Vw dealer in aylesbury only do Car parts & refuse to help me!

Please does anyone know the Part number & or the correct name for this Heater take off part that I kneed?

I have tried to explain over the phone where it fits to the Engine,What Engine it is from & described the Bloody thing but the Commercial Vw parts department say they have no Idea!???

I realy want to get my Van fixed this weekend

068 121 144 flange with sealing ring.
037 121 687 (O ring) seal 36 x 3.15

You ain`t gonna get it done this weekend mate

For parts etc try VAGCAT it`s online, just register, for nothing and trawl through
