expansion tank split

Post by clartsonly »

I have discovered reason why my water is leaking out when idling after a run. I may have fixed several things in the process of this discovery but the only reason it is leaking is because the expansion tank has a small split near the cap. has anyone tried a repair on this type of problem or do I need to buy a new expansion tank? grrr

so the water leaks out of the split when it is under pressure but not enough pressure to push the water into the filler tank then when the pressure drops it sucks the water out of the filler tank to replace the water that has leaked.

its a real shame it is starting to run really quite well, I had even started moving the trolly jack, and two tool boxes out of it too in preperation for a camping trip for a night or two.

The aftermarket ones have been known to be fairly unreliable and prone to leaking again after only a short life, get one from VW, they don't cost much more from them iirc, cheaper in the long run.

I replaced mine with a VW one last month, very easy, caught all the coolant as I disconnected the old one, put it all back in, no air got in so no need to bleed....

Super easy job.

I tried to epoxy my split tank to limp along but the tank flexes too much under pressure, don't waste your time.

damn, I already fitted the gsf one arhh well we will have to see whether it goes I will have to take the van out for a blast... these things really do take a long time to warm up.... also due the the benefits of darkness during the bleeding effort I can clearly see little flames shooting out of the "welded" exhaust so I know that is gonna go soon :(

arrrrrrhhhhh

removed mine and put it in the car ready to return to gsf tomorrow, I asked the man if that was a crack or a split in it, and was told is was probably a mark from the moldings. but low and behold ten miles down the road and half of my expansion tanks contents is being sprayed throughout the engine bay.

so I also undid it all this morning whilst it was still abit wam so most of the coolant from the engine is now on my drive. I will call up the vw garage at the same time and see if I can get one from them when I am returning this broken one.

coolant pressure tank

Post by mirams »

Hi,

I got a new one from VW, it includes the pressure cap, which they charge extra for at JK. Making getting both cheaper at VW dealership, also got a level sensor for £10 as the old one had packed in. I think the whole lot cost under £40.

hmmm I have three pressure caps and 2 level sensors, although I think the wiring to the level sensor is a bit suspect as I need to fiddle with it a little to get the light out on the dash after I have disconnected it.

just phone VW Wayside in letchworth to be told by tracey the parts manager and previously very helpful, that the T25 is considered a commercial vehicle so I cannot order any parts from letchworth, but have to travel to dunstable instead. some distance to travel, so I am getting the part from GSF Hitchin on my way home instead.

I phoned the parts division in dunstable and he said that he does quite follow the rules and will be able to post the parts to letchworth instead of me having to collect them from dunstable.
