hi guys i am lookin for answers , so i came here 8)

i am lookin for imformation here we go;

-lookin to buy a t25 preferrably crew cab whats a good price ? what to look for other than rust

-what engine is most reliable? 25 mpg + options only please? air or water?

-autobox? your thoughts?, dont wanna go fast just smooth :lol:

-what engines will fit on to autobox with minimum fuss

-2WD would be rear wheel drive? what are the weaknesses

- whats the easiest/ cheapest reliable engine

i have built mi own mk2 golf so know my way around a toolbox, just tryin to avoid the schoolboy errors of not havin the info!!

Hi, I had all the same questions before purchasing a crew cab...

In the end, we purchased a 1.6TD 2 owners from new 1989 model....
I don't know what level of spec it was but Im told it had some nice 'extras'
Twin headlight model, with passenger opening slide windows, rear heater, 5 speed, head light washers and central locking....but it was not onw of the VW 'special' models, the original owners simply ordered it like that from new....it was also a 6 seater (twin bench seats), some are 5 seaters.
Anyway, main thing is rust, and also check the load beds for dents, damage and more rust, and get inside the lower lockers for a good look around.........
Dont by one thats been used as a builders wagon for the past 15 years!!!!
Ours had been used to cart wood around and was really clean, infact the bloke wrekoned nobody had ever sat in the back!!!!! We paid 2.3k, although the head gasket let go after about a year........
As for engines...I dont like any of the petrol engines.........I would go for diesel....but thats only my opinion.
Trouble was, My friend then purchased a Caravelle, which in turn convinced me to sell the crew cab.......the velles are lovely and you have the option of removing seats to carry shed loads of stuff.....

so TD is best and look everywere for rust !

i like the idea of the crew cab coz it means you can haul stuff without it being inside the van, and they look dammmmm cool

are the petrol lumps not up to it then ? even 2ltr?

are they 8v 2ltr on carbs or injection i suppose it depends if they are air or water cooled

all i want is reliabillity

i see one going the other way on my way to work just wanna wave himm down ,make him an offer he cant refuse 8)

An airccoled will be pretty rare and old...

Petrol watercooled 1.9's are ok, but not exactly overendowed with power..
2.1 is much better.. but there are ways and means to make a 1.9 better too.. but I wont go into iit here (plenty of answers in the site)

D... slow.... very slow......

TD.... prob about the same as the 1.9 petrols.. but they they get a hard life.. 1600cc pushing 1.5 tons empty...

Auto... very rare from factory... but you can retro fit.. Subaru 2.2 go very well on them..

As said I would find the best body condition one and start from there..


then there are a multitude of other engines that get fitted.. including TDi etc being popular....

MPG... pertrols, expect 17 around town, 25 on a run..... TD prob 25 around town 35 on a run... and more modern engine "conversions" should do better..
Petrols.. convert to LPG...

is that the 2.2 subaru legacy engine early 90's cant rmember the code!

but that goes straight onna rare transporter autobox?

how do you wire that up can you run it on carbs !
