2.4 Aircooled T25 Engine

Post by gwa1079 »

Has anyone seen / done a conversion on a standard Aircooled 2.0L Lump

I am looking to fit the new 2400cc barrels, pistons etc and a new crank.

Just wanted to know if anyone has and what difference it has made if any.

Bored of being overtaken by Lorrys on big hills !!!!!

regards

Hints / tips greatfully accepted

Its all in the combination of parts.. going to 2.4 sounds like a plan, but it actually brings some other issues.. in a camper getting rid of the heat is important, the bigger cyls actuall makes it harder to do..

If it were me, I would refresh the bottom end and use some good rebuilt heads with a mild flow job, a not to racey cam and a set of twin carbs (dellorto/weber 40's) all set up on a rolling road.. combined with a good exhaust this should give you what you want... and be reliable..

But you also have to make sure the cooling system is in good nick and complete and working...

hello mate

I've just spent a few weeks looking at this as I was replacing my engine.

If you do it yourself you need to grind the case and the heads to fit, all parts are available, but there is a fair bit of discussion over heat and also a concern over the removal of metal.

You can buy a 2.4cu ready built from these guys
http://www.theengineshop.info/contents.htm
They quote £2,175 for the engine, but when I spoke with him he was very helpful and said the cost was £1600 inc vat for an exchange, its a 2.4 but with stardard heads & values, just bored out. They give a 1 year 12k mls warrentee.

The guy was really helpful and I was really tempted, but a number of people suggested I should not buy from them.

I have just order a Vege engine and has a set of Dellorto DRLA 40's coming. JUst going to get it set up on a rolling road and aparently it should be fine going up hills and towing my caterham to meets 8)

Good luck!

Just done my 1st 250 miles of running in of a 2.4 Aircooled. Bought it from TES via JK, and I'm fairly impressed to be honest. It's a good tight motor with far more torque, it would appear, than the old 2l cu.

Have you thought about converting to watercooled? Not much work to fit rad, pipes, fit lower front grill etc. Many turbo N.A diesel and turbo diesel engines available with plenty torque for motorway speeds and better mpg. The saving in fuel costs soon cover conversion costs if you can carry out work yourself to a safe standard

I've just taken my 2.4 out and gone back to standard 2.0 after suffering warping issues twice in 7,000 miles. I wouldnt do it again!
What the suppliers dont tell you is that the 2.4 doesn't work well in the T25. It works in a Beetle, Bay etc as a Type 4 engine conversion with upright cooling system but not on these.
I do have a honed out crankcase suitable for the 2.4 if anyone is still determined to do the conversion though

Did you? I honestly dont recall or maybe I was so wanting the 2.4 that I didnt even notice the negative bits. Never mind, you live and learn. I guess it might work better with an external fan assisted oil cooler but that another wedge of cash gone!
