Can anyone tell me what is involved in replacing the power steering pump on my van and how to bleed the system after fitting?
The local garage reckon it needs replacing.
Can the original be reconditioned? I was quoted a figure of around £145 for a new one.
The engine fitted is an AAZ 1.9TD
Thanks

Easy job, sits at the bottom under alternator. When replaced, fill reservoir upto level and turn wheels from lock to, pump will sound noisey then when all air out of system you will hear the pump go quite. Original can be recondition for around 60-80.
Why do they say it needs replacing, leaking? don't really suffer from any other problems.

Correct way.
Yes...pretty easy to change...as described but don't start the engine to bleed.
Take the weight off the front with a jack and turn the steering (without the engine running) from lock to lock, as many times as needed, keep topping up.
Now start the engine, do the same, keep topping up.
Point is the oil acts as a lubricant for the pump, starting it up whilst bleeding would be like filling a running engine after the oil had been drained and filter changed.
