AAZ performance?

Post by moo »

Hi all, I've recently bought myself a doka with an AAZ conversion and Im slightly worried by its performance.

On the flat it runs well, but the second it comes to any sort of incline it slows right down (had trouble keeping it above 45 on the hills on the way down to Woolacombe this weekend).

One thing I did notice on the way back is that if I release the accelerator pedal about half, it makes no difference to the power Im getting uphill just probabally saving a bit on diesel :?

This is my first T25 and a little unsure of the grunt force behind 'em but surely I should'nt be (seriously) struggling to keep up with our mates in a fully loaded bay with a stock 1600

Any ideas on how to improve my uphill ability??

Its a 5speed box too if that makes any difference.

Cheers, Moo

Check that when you press the accelerator pedal to the floor the arm on the injection pump actually moves all the way to it`s stop. (do it wth the engine stopped obviously) When the AAZ was fitted the arm may well have been modded to fit under the engine cover.
Keep it real.

Yep, the arm moves all the way to the stop. Could it be worth screwing the stop a few turns to allow more travel??
Another thing I have just noticed is that it appears to be losing coolant (from the max line down to ever so slightly above minimum over the 350 miles Ive done. Could this be another symptom of something bigger??

WHS^ when you modify/change/bodge to make it fit it is easy to get the arm that fits on the pump spindle in wrong place. get someone to press accelerator pedal to floor (with engine turned off) and you check in engine bay the throttle linkage is fully 'opened' . as above , make sure it is against the stop.
by the sound of it if half and full throttle are same engine speed/revs/power the linkage is in wrong place .

i know cos i did it me 'sel

to rectify it take off nut on top od spindle holding lever on , lift the arm up 5/10mm so it is clear of the splines it sits on and move it clockwise a couple of splines at a time before putting nut on. you will know when you have gone too far as the idle speed will have increased.

dead easy and 10 mins should do it .

oh and dont worry that because it goes to the stop something else is wrong . mine went to stop but was maxing out at 50% revs. DONT fiddle with the stops . move linkage/lever as above.

no worries , mine does regular 40mpg will sit at 55-65 all day , day in day out . will go to 80 (in very short bursts) BUT
with 2 adults , 2 kids fully loaded , interior etc etc it will pull up that hill south of bristol/avon bridge (brent knoll?) and similar hills in 5th and not lose engine/road speed and i still have enough to floor it and increase speed!!

Right, I noticed that a large piece of rubber hose was wedging the air filter box in place and covering up (what I presume) is the air intake hole. Ive had a jiggle and been round the block and it 'sounds' promising, but I havent had time to really take it out for a spin yet (prob a quick trip down the m5 and back up that hill, I dont know what its called either but I think I know the one you mean :? )
I had a look at the throttle arm like you said but its got all manner of covers and whatnot on so I'll wait and see if the freeing the blockage helps before going any deeper (then I shall probabally be right on the phone begging for advice putting it all back together again  )

Moo. you couldnt be doing things more correctly. Change / alter one thing at a time, chasnge too much and you will never know what caused what.

sounds like that hose is meant to be there. if it is a fat/corrugated 'flattened' looking hose , it is meant to cover that hole - it goes behind the tail light and is like a mini snorkel so that the engine draws cold air from outside via the vent - not warm air from the engine

I can see it should be there, just not how it was :? It was rammed sideways over the hole blocking it and wedging the box in position as opposed to fitting over it properly, so there was no chance of very much air being drawn in, either hot or cold.
If its supposed to draw cool air in then I may need to make a few mods so the hose will actually fit without any restrictions, at the moment Ive just removed it completely
Also going to try fitting new glow plugs and gp relay, as the light doesnt go out till the engines running- could this be another possible cause??
