I think my rear brakes need a bit of a service - I get a strong smell of burning of brake dust when I get out of the van at work most mornings and I had a note on last years MOT about the rear adjusters need replacing. Alos, the handbrake needed adjusting for the MOT, it will need the same this year.
So, can you get new adjusters?

I am pre empting guessing I might need new drums, shoes and fitting kit too

well.. if the threads are ok and it isnt seized, then a new one wont be much better... just shinier...
clean and copperslip the threads.. new shoes and do the wheel cyls, if you are feeling flush or they are quite worn, new drums too..
smelly brakes.... then something is wrong unless you have dragged the brakes on a long down hill... (not good practice in any case)
so it sounds like they need an overhaul.. fronts too...
