It's an air duct, and also a structural member, protecting against side impact, and also against impact to the front of the vehicle. Quite neat really.

Theres normally a vent down the bottom of the door deside the seat. It might have been just blocked up for the sake of it.

Yes, there is a vent but the air is not coming to that vent from this air duct. It must be some other purpose or may be not and it's just structural member...

Right.. I cant see any pics, but I assume you mean the duct you can see in the "A" pillar (door hinges)
On my early caravelle, this supplies fresh air to the vents in the roof channels (not air con) via a channel in the door and the "B" pillar

on my doka they are blanked (with a plastic cover) in the "A" pillar..

The vent on the rear of the door card is to allow air out of the vehicle when moving and this exits by venturi effect via the slots on the inside of the front edge of the door ("A" pillar end). In the wet you will see that the door dries out in the area of the vent and the leading edge of the door stays relativly clean..

I usually have the door vents open in summer and closed in winter though...... closed is the blue knob is backwards, open is blue knob forwards..

on caravelles with the roof vents that use the door channel you will find that the slider vent on the lower rear door is taped over and the slider is not fitted to the vent ,although the vent is fitted as a finishing trim.
i have also found that after 1986(ish) caravelles that dont use the slider vent on the door do not have the pressed vents in the door on the a pillar!
thus a different press on the door making! this may be due to caravelles having the pillar draft rubbers meaning no air will flow anyway?
