please dont be tempted by these cheap winches,
spend the same money on a used superwinch
or ramsay or even a warn (esp 8274) and then load it with plasma rope,cj.
bought some real off roaders!!!!!!!

Or buy a Tirfor hand winch and don't wind up with the winch at the wrong end of the vehicle, looking like a pillock anyway, as you've filled your vehicle up with mostly useless, heavy tat that has meant it sunk and got stuck in in the first place....

I'm sure winches have their place, but more often than not you'll be OK with a spade, a rope and some friends.

plasma rope

What the dickens is that, does plasma have any mechanical strength
We'll be having phantom rope soon... I do like the idea of ghost retrieval crews though, that pop up out of nowhere when you get stuck, like a chain-gang, drag you out and then fade away into the mists and mud till next time :D

Clive, you should get out more.

Plasma rope is a replacement for steel wire in winches, although if this were an off road forum CJ's post would have triggered a huge heated discussion about whether plasma rope actually IS better than steel wire and people would have got very angry about the whole situation.

from a safety point plasma is much safer to use,no frayed sticky out bits, when it breaks and it will break it just drops to the floor rather then spring back and cut your winch b£$ch in half,it weighs nought and you can put a lot more of it on the drum, its not good on abrasive surfaces though,so its a choice.

You haven't answered the question... I know its an alternative, but why the dickens does some advertising guru dream up 'plasma' rope?

Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Fiber (UHMWPE).

Maybe 'cos it's so light', its like its not there!

The most revolutionary element of the new system is our exclusive PLASMA® Patented Process.
With this process we are able to improve the ropes translational efficiency giving it higher strength, lower stretch and better abrasion resistance.

A lot of gliding clubs seem to be testing it, now when you've got 3,000' of wire rope under load...

All sounds quite wonderful - less heads missing after wire rope breakages, got to be good, eh?
