Gearbox Question ?

Post by dridgy »

Hi i have a 1981 combi van which had a 1.6d engine, i fitted a 1.9 engine a while ago. My gearbox is getting a bit worn.
How hard would it be to put a later gearbox on my van.
My gearbox code is DM.
Would i need to change the gear linkage, ive heard it may be different for the later boxes.
Thanks
John

You might need to change the linkage as there was two types early as fitted to the 1981 1.6ct Aircooled and the change over to the 1.6td.Then a later linkage which had a diffrent gear select position on a later production gearbox. If you have the later linkage it should fit a 1.9 petrol gearbox. If its the early type you could fit a DK gearbox as would have been fitted to the 2ltr cu Aircooled t25.Both gearboxes will need the input shaft and bell housing changed.

Diffrences between early&late linkage are this .The early gear select connection fitted on the gearbox is a polythene double ball that sits beween two plates on the gear change rod.The later gear selection connection is a single ball that fits into a metal cup on the gear change rod.Ie double polythene ball gearbox change early.Single ball gearbox connection late.
