Gertie, if your happy that you have the right size make the url part under the pic go blue (left click i think) then copy it.
Stag 2...go to your profile page on this site (top of screen) and paste it in the avatar part.
NB....if you are not happy with the size you can always push the E D I T button above the picture you want (in photobucket)and in the E D I T section theres a automatic Avatar size button.
