Automatic to manual conversion

Post by Highland John »

I have bought a Freg 2.1 automatic caravelle that has a knackered box . I have just bought a C reg 1.9 DG van mainly for its engine ( as my daily drivers engine died ) but as it is fitted with a 5 speed box I was hoping I could use this van as a donor to complete a manual conversion .
Has anyone experience of doing this before ?
I know I will need :-
The gearbox
pedal box
slave cylinder
but what else
any info would be great
Cheers John

I was searching for a good used autobox for my 1981 aircool .Luckly i managed to obtain one.In the process of searching i made contact with a fleabay seller who breaks late T25 not to far from me.He had a few weeks ago a late autobox the seller id is westsidet25s location Worcester park surrey.Regarding your question about the manual conversion i considered this as an option if i could not find one for a fair price.I was told you need to change the drive shafts .I am not sure why as the cvs joints and drive shafts looked the same when i removed the old autobox. I have a spare drive shaft from a manual will measure to see if there are any diffrences.I may still convert over if there are any problems in future.

Hi John, when i bought my van it had just been coverted to manual. One thing that hadnt been done was the reverse light switch. The autos have them at the front by the gearshift i think but the munuals have the switch sticking out of the side of the g-box. I had to extend the wiring to join up to the loom.
Another thing on the to do list hey??

Whoa so much info cheers for the advice guys . George I will be in touch soon . The donor van is at a friends garage he wants it scrapped pretty smart . We were hoping we could cut through the driveshafts to get the box out easier but I take it there is no shortcuts .
