starting grief...move the battery?

Post by ermie571 »

Ok folks, wonder if some of you knowledgeable peeps could apply the old grey matter to a problem we have.

patient = 2.1 carb running LPG
Sockenss = reluctance / complete refusal to start
Synptom - nice red lights on dash, cicks heard for gas. Sluggish start as if battery dieing.

what we done so far....
replaced battery with a known good starter (nicked from other van)
checked and remade as many earths as we could find - engine bay, gear box and battery
replaced started with known good one (from other van again...but a 1.9)

so....all these things helped, and the last thing was the starter on Sunday just gone. Started really well, with much gusto, until this morning following heavy rain (is this the problem?)

Going to do the starter bush (only reason not done at weekend was that it wouldn't come out, and hubby didn't have time to really have a go at it)

Also, could there be a fault with the front to back wiring? How would we tell? Would moving the battery as Mocki suggests help?

"behind ( well technically, ifront) of the ns tail light cluster, at the bottom of the air turret. Its dead easy to do, you need about 4ft of starter cable, to connect the battery directly to the solenoid, leaving the existing main wire from the front ( where the battery was) connected as well...then under the seat, connect all the positives together in a insulated block( this csan now be used as a jump starting point)

add a neg connection to body earth where the battery now is, and job done....

a further mod i made was to get a thick wire ( about half as thick as the starter wire) and connect the alternator direct to the battery, isntead of going via the starter motor solenoid connection..."

Mocki - what is the benefit of the last modification?

if I understand correctly, youhave to leave the front to back wiring....so if I have a fault there, would it still affect the van if we moved the battery (which makes complete sense and will probably be done anyway)

thanks in advance

What's the battery voltage before you crank it?

You mentioned it's worse after heavy rain - it could be that water is getting somewhere and draining your battery so that it isn't quite full...

A fully charged lead-acid battery should read about 12.6 volts, so it should be somewhere close to that.
