HELP!

Post by cjvmee »

Hi,im on a campsite in North London...ive been here for a couple of weeks and been using my leisure battery. To charge it i ran the engine and everthing was fine..the other day i noticed it was losing charge much faster, when i came back today i decided to go on mains hook up, but while moving the van on site the fan belt broke!! Anyway the upshot is the battery doesnt appear to be charging and tonight of all nights the Truma heaters cut out and the red light is flashing .does this not work on mains hook up?
Anyway does anyone have any ideas as to why the leisure battery isnt charging, and does the Truma work off 240v?
And finally does anyone know who does these type of repairs in London...cos my fridge gave up the ghost as well last week!!
Sorry for the long and garbled post...any suggestions appreciated.
Chris

your Truma works on 12 volt but the hook up should charge your leisure battery making it work as it is charging. if your stuck and your charger isn't working go to halfords or one of those places and get a cheap car charger. plug it into your 240 socket and connect the clamps to your leisure battery. Sounds like the easiest solution for a quick fix would be to fit a new fan belt and recharge the leisure battery? I'm not sure that all leisure batteries will recharge from 240v hook-up, doesn't it depend on what sort of zig unit you have in the van?

Chris,

Get a charger to charge both leisure and mains batteries. Trying to charge them by running engine is a waste of time and fuel. Reason is alternator puts out like 10-20 amps when charging depending on engine rpm... the more battery is charged, the less amps going in, etc, etc, etc. Anyway, if battery is down 1/3 and it's a 65ah battery that's 20ah it needs to be fully charged... that's 10 amp charge for 2 hours. Hope that makes sense. I don't want to run my engine for 2 hours to charge my battery.
