Removing Front Prop Shaft

Post by willf »

So i have a cv joint gone. My intention is to take off the front right shaft altogether and take it to a local company who specialise in refurbing cv's.

Does any one have any tips?

Will i need special tools?

Can i drive it once it's off or will that really bugger the wotsits?

alen key drivers for your socket set.
Make sure you clean all the crud out of the head of them before trying to undo them, then ensure the alen key is all the way home with a tap from a hammer.

once you have undone all the bolts you'll discover the only way to get the shaft out ts to drop the front hub off.

not sure about driveing with one front shaft think I'd be inclined to drop the driveshaft..................?

You will not be able to drive the vehicle as the hub bearing needs a joint in there and the nut done up tight to hold it together, otherwise only thing keeping the wheel on is the brake disc.

Lots of plusgas and patience, it's not a great job to do. Maybe worth thinking about doing them both in which case it's easier to drop the front diff and undo the arb mounts to remove both shafts inwards, it's also a crap job, but saves taking the front suspension to bits.

Top tip undo the big nut and crack the wheel nuts before putting it in the air, but leave the wheel on so you have something to hold while undoing inner cv joint hex socket cap bolts.
