LPG & Leisure Gas

Post by lp24 »

Having booked the van in with Gasure for LPG conversion and leisure gas installation I realise how little I know about how it works in practice!

I gather there are 2 tanks, one for the engine gas and one for leisure gas, but ...

How are they each filled?
Is it the same stuff in each tank?
Where is the best place to locate each tank in a camper?
How do you know how full the tanks are?
Is there anything else I need to know?

I know it's a good idea, I'm just not sure how it works  :?

I had a talk to him today and I know I would like both systems. He just wants to know what I want! I've already messed up his programme as I booked it in for LPG conversion and then I found I needed the other stuff. I didn't like to waste his time on too many questions about the details. He's a busy man, especially with the price of fuel now. He must be stacked out with work :!:

I just wondered how the gas systems work in practice for filling the tanks etc.

Les,
Good choice going with Steve.

We have the 55 litre tank in the wardrobe in the rear corner of the van (it only takes up half the space and we didn't use the wardrobe anyhows.
You could go for a tank under the seat - this depends on how much space you have under there - it does vary - Autosleepers have a tight space.

Filler point is in the rear corner panel side low down - on the outside.

Leisure tank is under the fridge on the underside of the van (20 litres I think we have). (Same stuff - Propane - in both tanks)

When you fill up at a pump - it automatically overfills into the leisure tank (meaning you always have a full leisure tank - very handy) so you never worry about how full it is (should be good for several weeks of camping - we have heating, fridge and hob/grill running from it).

How do you know how full the tanks are?

Don't worry about the leisure one - there will be plenty.......

You get a little LED block with 5 LEDs by the steering wheel.
When you fill up you get 5 LEDS
We get 4 at about 60 miles - down to three at 100 miles ish then you don't worry too much about the other two - just expect to fill up between 150 and 200 miles (20 ish mpg at the mo).

This will be different with a bigger tank.

When you get it done - buy the two continental adapters from steve if you plan to go abroad.

Any other questions - come back to me (But not about the technical details

:? ........)

Thanks Mikey, thats very helpful. Does it mean that when you're using leisure gas it's emptying the road tank first or does it only overflow into the leisure tank when you fill up?

Busy or not, you are the customer and he is the supplier. Ask all you want, I am sure he will not mind. If he does then find another supplier! Going by what I have seen on here he is a great guy who knows what he is doing. Thats important. An experienced fitter will be able to explain in laymans terms!
The customer ain't always right, but the customer is always the wages for the supplier!

Another one to add to this:

When camping I use a gas BBQ is it possible to have an out let so I can attach the BBQ to and use that gas?

Your are correct in that you use the Vehicle gas first - however there is a one way valve (or something similar) so you can't when you run out of LPG then run over into using the Leisure Gas.
The leisure gas is topped up when you fill up - after/before filling the Vehicle gas.

As for the BBQ attachment - flame thrower - bunsen burner on each wheel  - I think that is one for Steve.
