unless it's a solid lifter (re conditioned) engine there is no clearance!

Ok, so, not what I've been told. I'll look it up on Mitchell autos then. I know they [dg] have hydraulic lifters but mine have gotten noisy, I set then (after having excess play on the fingers) and after about 2000 miles or so they are noisy again. I just want to know to be doing this with the engine hot or cold. I'm not going to change anything if theres no play under the correct conditions, as it kind of signifies another fault..

righto..well I have been told by my betters that they should be set when the engine is warm..or cold it matters not.
but after a good 15 mile run , then the lifters are "pumped up" and should be half a turn in from just touching

Ahah. that could have been my problem, as last time I did the half a turn in thing, thats the bit I DID remember, but I hadn't driven far first (only from car park to workshop) I'll give that a go when I get some new rocker cover gaskets and see if that helps. Cheers Kev!

I too have the same problem...mine have become noisy again.

I just hope the lifter(s) are not on the way out

Aye. tis what I'm worried about, but soon I'll have my own workshop I can hole it up in if thats the case, and til then it'll just have to be noisy. Its not like you can hear it that much over my exhaust anyway, its just at tickover it sounds horrible.

sure someone on here mentioned reducing the figure in the haynes, and VW manual by a turn, as it is ecxessive, they should'nt leak oil and become rattly until 'pumped up' after a while, unless starting to wear, i was told by a mechanic mate.

indeed Haynes wants two turns.

Toomanytoys recommends 1/2 a turn

I suppose after 150.000 miles they are entitled to get a little worn and don't pump up fully ,as the return spring gets a tad weak

1/2 turn preload is correct... for hydraulic lifters (there are a few rebiulds out there with solids in, but these wont work o a h"hydraulic" cam... they will wear out...

Short drives wont help and will never clear if you only do 5 miles or start it and stop it for 5 mins...

Oil is important too.. nothing thinner than a 15w40 and if tired a 20w50...
Quality oil filter too.. I only use Mann...

If all of the above... then take it for a run... after 15-20 mins it should be all nice and quiet.....
