Is this a fuse?

When I removed the fuse box from my T25, I noticed this big fuse. Can anyone tell me what it is for? It is clearly blown but everything on the van is working fine!

It looks like the Glowplug fuse, how wide is the metal strip that's blown through (in mm)?

thats the fuse for the 2 speed radiator cooling fan,cj.

The fuse strip is 6mm wide.
I've just noticed the red/white wire attached to the right-hand terminal has been cut, its just dangling in thin air! Any ideas where its supposed to go?
I'll check out the fan, thanks CJ.

I don't know if the relay above it is related but I notice one of its terminals has been snapped off! Any ideas what the relay is for?

Hmmmm..... I'm getting the feeling it might be something to do with the 2 speed radiator fan....

Its just a hunch though... :P

With it being a VW it could be the Heizgebläsesicherung.

Just the fuse. The fuseholder would be something like Heizgebläsesicherungshalter (I'm guessing on this one).

Well the wire's been cut so I guess its been disconnected!
Someone, at some point, has been seriously chopping things up in there - why do people do that?!!!!!
I'd better check to see I've got some sort of device for cooling the rad then, cos the original can't be working!

Is it petrol or diesel? Petrols seem to run their fans on [low?]speed fairly often when warm in slow traffic, diesels on the other hand don't seem to use their fans very often at all, and then only on the first speed. (at least thats what my TD does, I've herd the fan come on once in half a year, never gets hot. Other owners have said this is normal.)

If the second speed is broken the first speed might still work fine so you might still have all the cooling you really need (you've probubly over done it a bit if you need 2nd stage), worth checking still I guess - try shorting the temp switch wires to fool it into comming on, you'll then know the curcuits work asuming the switch(s) itself isn't faulty.

As to why people butcher things I have no idea, seems stupid to me. I guess they don't understand how the system works or should work (as it probubly had a fault they tried to fix) and thort they could improve/fix it better than VW, something I don't think they manage to achive at all if your gut reaction when seeing it is "what the hell is this mess, who did that". If they did a good clever job you'd have to know the VW system well to spot it had been changed, but often the original spec works better than many modifications.

The red/white cable that has been cut is the feed to the temperature switch in the radiator.
The first stage fan is switched by this temperature switch.
When the coolant temperature gets to the 'second stage' level, the temperature switch switches the relay which allows more current to flow through the thicker red cable (underneath relay plate in picture) to the fan motor, hence it goes faster.
