had a long drive last weekend bout 300 miles, so proud of van not one jump. however went out on sat to move van, no clutch and a large amount of fluid from engine/gbox area. now before i get someone to tow her what could i go look for or try myself, have not checked clutch fluid reservoir as was putting on a new roof at time.

I agree with Karl.
Dead easy to check - just grab the instrument dash cover at the back and pull towards you -the reservoir is there.
Clutch slave cylinder gone perhaps?
Easy enough to get at - therefore i would assume easy enough to change.

definitely the first place to start - that cylinder needs checking - if the reservoir level has dropped - you will see a hose coming out from the r h side of the reservoir down to behind the clutch pedal - the hose goes into the clutch master cylinder - these are easily renewable - the hose that comes out the clutch master cylinder goes under the van - all the way to the back of the engine - to the clutch slave cylinder -
the slave sometimes leaks along with the master (wow! unintentionally poetic!) -
worth checking - the bleed screw - sits on top of the slave cylinder and is used for bleeding the clutch after a master/slave cylinder change -
both master n slave n bleed screw - available from jk and gsf - good to put plenty of wd40 on nuts n bolts to be taken off beforehand - the fluid can get ieverywhere n do damage - so lots of cloths n keep everything clean and wiped down -
haynes carries full explanations -
the only problem i had - was rusted seized up nuts n bolts - took ages to try n wrestle them off -

Easy to get at if you've got deformed fingers .... if you let the mounting bolts drop down into the bracket it's a 'tears before bedtime' moment
Then you have the hose to disconnect and the system to bleed once the cylinder's replaced.

- I agree whole heartedly! And after 20 years are those nuts tight!Easy to get at if you've got deformed fingers ....
Don't even ask about the Hydraulic fitting going into the slave cylinder, the fitting is made of effing plastacine, it rounds if you look at it the wrong way.
I ended up taking mine to the VW dealer (it's only 500m from my door), cost me 250 yoyos though.

it was the pipe going to the slave cylinder that got me too - !
just impossible - tried w a brake spanner - mole wrench - plus gas - wd - adjustable wrench - tenderness n threats - 3 days on - a blow torch n heating up managed to wrestle the !!!!!!!! off!

With respect, if you have to ask about the clutch cylinder etc I would strongly recommend you employ a professional to sort your problems. It affects the brakes too (same fluid and reservoir) and the air will be right through the whole system by the sound of it.
