Seems to work ok on gas but not on 12v or 240v.
Have taken it out of van but can't seem to see anything obvious like disconnected wires etc.
Any clues?

the heating element may have become disconnected or just plain broken
as the gas directly heats the fluid, electric requires an element.
to check the element just try a continuity test by using a multi meter with a continuity tone.
there should be a complete circuit from the switch to ground

Seems odd that both 12v and 240 dont work.
Saying that, they are getting old - mine doesnt work on gas!
There are two electric elements - one for 12v and one for 240v.
For 12v it could be the relay thats gone. Are you sure you're getting 240v ? Might be worth a check with the multimeter....

Thanks Guys that's helpful.
I will attempt to check it out with a multi-meter but as I really do not know how to use these things that might be difficult.
Now that I have removed the fridge I thought I would just connect to a spare battery to see if I can get it going. However, the connector for the 12 volt has three leads brown ,blue and black. So I am not sure which colours I need to connect to the pos and neg terminals and what about the unused one?

fridges draw a lot of current (8-9 A) and will flatten a battery before any thing cold happens, but you'll be able to check any voltage in the circuit

should only be two wires from the 12v element...use them
check that switch too...does it work ok?
