I don't understand how I did it in the first place, I thought I'd been careful to take one off and put the other one on in exactly the same position . . . obviously not though!!

don't beat yourself up tony,, from telling us you have no mechanical knowledge of the bus to doing lots of your own work has taken less than a year so hats off to you for trying
for future reference tony,, regardless of it's shape,, the rotor arm will only locate properly on top of the shaft in one position. if you look inside the hollow bit of the one you took off you'll see a large peg cast into it.. this fits into a corresponding notch in the top of the shaft which means the rotor arm will only push fully home in one position.

again regardless of shape if you look at every rotor arm there will be an exposed brass contact strip at one end only(thats the bit that transfers the spark to the right plug lead as it spins),, take note of where thats pointing next time you take it off or if you ever need to take the dizzy out for any reason m8.
well done on sorting it. 8)

it's the only way to learn for me -
trying to make sense - asking around - looking at books - speaking to others - trying again - making more sense - asking questions clearer - sorting it more - making own notes - a little more knowledge - n sometimes sorting out - good feeling! :) it
