stimpy don't be dis-heartened with the van m8,,, just remember that the only things for the mot next year will be things you know are wrong.
oil leaks are traditional with aircooleds,,, we consider it more "marking their territory" m8
one problem is that peeps believe they should be filled to the top mark on the dipstick  actually mine just burns and leaks it if i top it up to there  quarter of an inch above the low mark seems ideal.
keep it alive m8 as they're getting thin on the ground.
p.s. i'll wager that the largest portion of your bill was the labour??
get along to techy weekends and get some assistance from club members to do your own repairs 8) its fun

Hello - replying to several people in one post, so here goes...

Daisy - I'll call the Farnborough bloke as soon as next payday (Feb 15th. The latest bill has left us living off lentils for the rest of this month :(

Steve and Bev - many thanks for that offer of help with the bearings - I'll contact you via this forums PM thing soon abou that :)

Rozzo - you're right, the labour was the biggest part of the bill. I'm gutted though, cos one of the things I expressedly asked him to do (replace the accelerator pedal mechanism) has not been done, despite the huge bill!

Many thanks to everyone for the helpful advice. We've had a talk about the van and will probably sort the remaining techie faults and keep it (as long as the diagnosis re the rust isn't terminal, lol).

Many thanks,

Stimpy

Hi Stimpy,

I know how you feel!!!

I went through the shall I sell her? or spend some hard earned wedge on rebuilding the motor and getting some welding of arches and replacement sills etc, etc.?

I cleaned her up took loads of photos and just before I wrote the for sale advert, took her for a run to make sure everything was fine and I could`nt place the ad!!!

Don`t know what it is but after 4 years and great hols, she just makes me smile everytime I drive her.

Spoke to Andy at Farnborough VW centre and he laughed as I had told him I was selling, saying "Thought you would`nt do it.You have a basically sound van there and once I do some welding for you she`all last you out,Better put you back on the waiting list for welding then!!"

When your heart rules, you just want someone independent to tell you you are not completely mad esp when budget/funds are limited.

Hope things work out.Regards John :rofl
Hmm How much did you say?For that you gotto be joking....
