Coolant problem !!!!

Post by Kevin_R »

Hi there...could i please just ask your advice.....have you ever experienced this problem...and if so...what did you do to rectify it....i drove 68 miles home on Sunday from middlesbrough...no problems put the camper on the drive ...and when i turned off the ignition..and was just getting out...i heard a hissing noise...went to the back of the bus...and noticed water dripping down the back from somewhere...opened the fill up flap and saw that the top up water bottle was full to the top ...so i carefully unscrewed the cap and all the antifreeze water came pouring out...
i must mention that at no time on my journey home did the temp light come on...so could it be that the camper got too hot cos the fan didn't kick in or could it be a fuse or a blockage...or even the thermostat i wonder ?...my bus is a 1983.... 1915cc engine
your advice will be much appreciated
thanks very much

Your filler bottle will be full normally. The reason for this is because the water expands when its hot. It sounds like your engine overheated. Was your temperature gauge over to the right? You might just have an airlock.

No the filler bottle should never be FULL, it should be between min and max... the expansion tank in the engine bay should be full..
first, get a new Gen VW "rad cap" and bleed the system down..

then its a case of making sure there are no leaks around the system that can let air in.. and that the water pump isnt leaking and actually turning.. unfortunatly then its prob a head gasket problem... but thats another story, do the rad cap and bleed etc first.

when you get a new cap the seal on the water level sensor will go and you will need to replace that too. I have bled the system about 5 times and I still get leaks from either the expansion tank, unless I replace the cap and water level sensor and then for a little while from the other one. this weekend I am checking the fans operation if it works I will put in an override switch like in the fiat cinqcento as the head gasket constantly goes on an engine which only cuts in the fan at 120 degrees C. the fuse is number 1 and should be 30 amps, I checked mine the other day and it was fine, there is also a relay at number 5 named 24, which is something to do with the radiator fan. mine only overheats after driving for at least 40 miles then standing ticking over for a few minutes after.
