I have no technical knowledge but my 2 litre Aircooled has run on gas for over 3 years now and the engine is shagged now , nowt to do with gas tho' more to do with third time around the clock .....gas it!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is no extra wear on any engine with LPG, the combustion temperature is increased by 8 degrees, this is in no way any detrement to any engine.
We use the flashlube system to protect some engines that are made from sub standard or poor materials, the Vauxhall engines and anything Japanese is very suspect in materials so the flashlube system is used to counteract the temperature increase on the valves.
Most German, Scandinavian and Italian engines are perfectly suited to LPG, the flat four engine is perfectly suited to conversion as it is already set up with hardened seats and valves.
As to extra engine wear, I converted four of the rally school cars at Oulton Park, the mechanics who work there tell me that that the engines are lasting 3 to 4 times longer between rebuilds due to the lack of contaminents and they are very happy to tune the motors to the extra high octane the LPG has.
If your installer has a decent knowledge then he/she will advise you of the best course of action on the conversion and whether to add the flashlube system and never forget we are converting vehicles of vastly more horsepower than any VW Camper will ever have some we, even with twin turbos pushing out in excess of 300bhp.
My own 2.0ltr air cooled VW has done in excess of 300,000 miles and 185,000 of those have been on LPG.
Choose your installer carefully, make sure they have a good knowledge of the vehicle you have or have done similar vehicles and can advise you on the best course.
