Removing Driveshafts

Post by CovKid »

I'm replacing a rear driveshaft today (not syncro) as the bolts sheared on the outer joint. The flange it bolts to therefore needs to come out too so I can swap it for a spare I have that doesn'thave broken bolts stuck in it.

Am I right in thinking that this can be removed simply by undoing the axle nut or isn't it that straight forward?

I have a new rebuilt driveshaft with the axle still attached, ready to go in.

Yes, crack the nut while on the ground (3/4 drive and a length of bar + a slightly larger person really helps (358ftlbs IIRC)

then jack and support.. undoo inner joint, withdraw...

Of course any thing can go wrong with that....

Yup as I just found

Putting it back not quite so simple when attached to a driveshaft - no room or ability to apply any force and the spacer between bearings was somewhat uncooperative. Just ended up stripping off hub, fitting new bearings while I was at it, then refitting bearing assembly and driveshaft as one assembled unit through suspension arm

I won't even mention the state of me, my clothes, hands etc etc. Can be done - just a pig in reverse order by look of it.
