I'd be getting in touch with a company called TSR Engine conversions, as I expect they have also needed similar items when fitting Subaru engines into Campers of all years.

I know the gearbox is the weakest link in my equation at the moment but I am seeing a very nice man about him building me an uprated gearbox. The next weakest link in the equation will be the gearbox mount. I was looking for uprated as this is what I have put on my racing 67 cooper and it made a lot of difference into clutch release and power transfer etc.
I was looking at putting an uprated one in as I am intending to replace my current worn out mount.
Left a message at the number provided with a call back request.
Cheers for the link.

Got the call back and top bloke.
Did not tell me what I wanted to hear but top bloke anyway.
Basically he stated I would get around 200 to 600miles out of the recon box before it turned into scrap metal.
Got to go see a man about a rebuild on this recon box of mine. Or possibly sell the recon box and put the money towards and rebuilt box. Anybody any ideas how much I could get for a recon box?
Cheers

apologies for being ever the pessimist, but just going on my own 5 speed g/box woes, and thats only being 'bullied' by the std. 2.1.(snapped mainshaft)
is yours a 4 or 5 speed? the 4's are stronger from what i've heard, and any german engine conv. i've ever seen uses the 4 speed (if keeping a T25 'box) or the one from the engine's donor vehicle.
did i imagine it or did someone once mention that a transaxle from a Renault (excuse the language!) could be used with a bit of modifying?? as for what you could get for your g/box, the specimens at some Vanfest traders stalls were marked up at 300 quid! and looked like they were dug up out of a field.

There are a couple of gearboxes which can be made to fit and I beleive the renualt alpina is one that will work.
I have a standerd 5 speed which is reconditioned but after speaking to TSR they reckon that the gearbox will not last even if I drive it slowly.
I have been looking for a 4 speed DK box for a while as I will use it to get it modified by Aiden or someone similar. But have not had much luck in relation to cost or condition etc. I have a couple of leads but will wait untill I get back from France now and wait till things are sorted out.
The cossy motor is now parked up for the moment on the engine stand and will have to wait, I have just bought a 2 litre stock motor to throw in it for a while untill I get the gearbox sorted.
Bit gutted really but things come to he who waits.

the 1st and reverse part of the mainshaft on a 5 sp and the extra casing plonked on the end looks like a real afterthought job by VW to me, dont know if you saw the cutaway 4sp at vanfest last yr in one of the sheds at a german eng. conv. stand, but to me it just looked a stronger, simpler set up, and i wish i'd have rebuilt a 4sp with the same final drive as the 5sp i rebuilt now, as a stronger option, still you're always cleverer after the event eh? all part of the learning curve
