Stupid leaky metal water pipes!!!

Post by fergus77 »

The story so far with the 1.9 1Y top end rebuild,

installed the recon head and all the bits and bobs, and went to the front to open the bleed valve on the raidater to find no bleed valve but a 13mm bolt

Ok, so maybe not the orginal 1.6D raidater (Can't spell), but when i opened it and released the pressure, water started peeing out of the metal water pipes, somewhere up where they bend to go through the bracket into the engine bay.

Now, obviously this is why the van over heated and fried the head in the first place, but how the hell do you fix them?

Had thought of cutting the rotten bit of pipe off and joining with more rubber pipes.

Has anybody done this??

And cheers to andysimpson and camper for the tech help with the install, many thanks guys

The 13mm bolt in the rad is correct. The problem with patching the pipe is it won't be far leaking in other places.

Hiya,

I had the same problem with a dg engine, replaced metal water pipes with hydraulic hose for the full length of the van which worked really well, much easier to install than rigid pipes.

Also, all the rads I've bled have had a 13mm brass(?) bolt at the top left for bleeding, don't know if that's the same for all engine types.

The 13mm bolt is what i have on mine, you just loosen it a bit to get rid of the air, what you could do to fix your leaks [untill you replace the pipes] is to buy much longer rubber pipes and fit them with two hose clips.
good luck!
I dont think, so I'm not[do I exist?]

Sounds like a good idea Dave, but are they ok for the temperatures involved?

if you get them in "coolant" hose they are,, they're the same stuff as the short rubber bits around the engine, but longer.
ring pirtek out the yellow pages and they'll sort you out with the right hose

Halfords do ribbed flexi hoses that will fit on to the flow&return pipes into the van.My pipes are plastic that had metal ends that broke off but i have managed to use halfords flexi hoses to connect onto the plastic to engine hoses.

cheers for the help guys.

the 13mm bolt through me a bit as the pic's in the manual don't show that, well, my manual anyways.

Was so looking forward to driving the new van tonight but i guess i'll have to wait to sort out the leak

Andysimpson, the torque settings you gave me, did them as you said but do i have to run the engine up to operating temp and then torque another 1/4 turn?

After 1000 miles do they need doing again?

Camper, are those pipes you mention exspensive from halfords? Just looked on JK website and they have a bottom hose for £12
