Dodgy starter motor ?

Post by glennyboy2 »

Just recently got starting problem. When I turn the key it only goes for maybe half a turn, then nothing.Sometimes I get a full couple of turns like a dead bettery. Eventually it starts, but I'm woried I may get stranded one day.The battery is fine.Any ideas??

Ours (1989 1.9 DG) did this too. Turned out to be a bad 'signal wire' connection on the starter itself. Try undoing and cleaning all the connections, after disconnecting the battery - lead. It was the crimped one which played up on ours, water runs down it and collects in the back of the crimp causing it to corrode. Our sparky replaced the crimp (6mm yellow female) with a shrink fit one.

Hope this helps,Ian.

Also there's an earth strap (braided) from the gearbox that sometimes gets a bit resistant esp where it's bolted (13mm) to the underbody. Could be worth a quick look/clean/grease while you're at it.

Hi mate, mine had the same sort of thing, so i was going to do the gearbox bush thingy. withdrew the starter and the poles on the back of the solinoid were loose.... tightened them/grease etc, seems to have done the trick...
