No I dont think you have to but I would probably join the new cable onto whatever remains of the old one with a connecting block of suitable size and pull it through, a lot easier that way! :D

Unfortunately Mr camper 2 you will have to drop your tank to replace the metaled rod which attaches to your handbrake lever, cannot be forced or dragged out as previously suggested, the rod has a rubber sleeve which is shaped half round with a collar on one end which locates into a shaped bracket where the rubber sleave clips in, to hold it up against the underside of van floor also to stop the rod flaying about, bit of a pain to fit into handbrake lever, but can be done with patience,Replaced mine during my conversion as mine snapped off at adjusting end, and I had fiited a temporary cure, if yours has broken off at adjuster end you can repair it with a 10mm threaded long sleeve nut, screw sleeve onto rod end with thread lock. screw snapped end into sleeve and put a lock nut on. this will do as a temporary repair, -

:D Forgot to mention you withdraw the handbrake rod by pulling it towards the back of the van after uncupling from the handbrake lever, when your lying on your back under the van???????
