I can give you cylinder head torque values for a 1.9n 1x engine as fitted to T4 vans 1st stage 4.0 kgm (29ft.1bs)
2nd stage 6.0kgm(43ft 1bs)
3rd stage 7.5kgm (54ft 1bs)
Angle tighten by 180 degrees or 2x90 degrees without torque
wrench without slackening re-tighten in the same manner
600 miles .Information taken from the pocket mechanic
Peter Russek manual. From my own experiance i used these values for my 1.6td .The angle tighten by 180 degrees or 2x90 degrees i found difficult to acheve without fear of snapping the bolts.Make sure the threads in the block are clean&free of water&oil a airline would be ideal. Use new streech bolts and screw through the block and out again to ensure no binding or hydralic preasure from the bolt thread&block before replacing the cylinder head.

Looking in my Haynes Manual ...

Stage 1 10 Nm (7 lbf ft)
Stage 2 50 Nm (37 lbf ft)

No difference across the engine range (1.9 or 2.1)

Hope this helps .. but maybe you need a cross check as Haynes is not always correct!

No worries andy, i'll do it your way as you've done them before. Will it need torquing again after a certain millage?

Thats for a petrol engine (1.9 or 2.1) The 1Y is a diesel lump :D

Andy, heres another question for ya dude,

got the head today, a 1Y 1.9 head from a vw caddy 2002 model.

Everything looks good for the installation apart from a pipe on the camshaft locking side of the head, just above the water jacket. Now, i assume this pipe is some sort of breather pipe or oil return pipe but i'm not sure which. Have you ever come across this issue in regards of how to deal with it?

My thoughts were to block it off with a big self tapper and then solder around the join to seal it, but if it's a breather then surely pressure will build up in the top half of the engine?

Any thoughts dude??

forgot to mention,

the head gasket on the old head had the 3 punch marks in it, so i assume the gasket needed for the new head will be the same, or will there be a slight differance in the cam duration that will require a thicker or slimmer head gasket :? :?

Just something that was milling over in my head

I think that is a oil return pipe for a 1.9 block fitted with a turbo. Not to sure if that it is.Provided you do not get the head skimmed by a machine shop you just need to replace with a three notch.Gasket thickness is determined by the piston projection at top dead centre for various VW 1.6/1.9 diesel engines. It might be an idea to get the cylinder head by a reconditioner in case its warped before replacing the gasket.

hey camper,

Yeah, thought about that and got a complete recondioned unit from VW & Audi breakers, really cool guys that did me proud in the past for parts for my old T4.

I no what you mean about the deck height, wasn't to sure if there was a differance in the length of the valves with the recondioned head and the fried one

So an oil return pipe you think? suppose i'll just block it off and see what happens
