not quite the 'oil buzzer of doom' OOOHH! - but getting there... does anyone know (has anyone looked) at the black box at the left hand side of the engine bay? A wiring connector box? worth having a look at/clean up?

It`s the wiring loom connector box, houses different things on petrol or diesel vans. If you need to replace just the engine bay wiring loom then this is where you`ll plug into, it`s the main joint box between the engine loom and the main loom that runs back to the front end.
Just clip off the lid and have a look inside, worth pulling out the wiring and giving it all a good clean and check the multiplugs for corrosion etc. Diesel `vans have the glow plug relay and 50A strip fuse in there, also a relay for the aux, water pump on the TD I believe.
