oldiguana,
Happened to mine once when I reset trip. It click click clicked when driving along, but eventually stopped clicking and worked. I have only plucked up courage to trip it once since then, and it worked fine.
There was a post about a little white (Cog?) inside the speedo needing a touch of super glue or sommat, some months (Years?) ago.
Maybe a search of the posts?
Mike

Hi. I Have a 1989 Vanagon and had this same problem for the last few months. Only just taken the speedo out to look at the prob and change the kph black dials to white mph I made. Anyway the problem was obvious and easily fixed. Both the odometer and trip reading dials are connected by cogs. The odometer mileage display gog has a thin steel rod through all the individaul dials that hold the numbers and it is meant to sit in a a plastic housing at either end. Well at one end the thin steel rod was not mounted and all it needed was pushed through from the opposite end with a thin headed screwdriver so that the thin rod was equi- distant at each end. Not fitted it back in evan yet cos im painting the pointers for the dials, But i have tried turnning the cogs manualy and they are working fine. Hope this helps. Allan
