fuel tank

should i get a new fuel tank the one i have took off has a bit of rust/rot on it not through to the inside
or can it just be cleaned up and treated

Good wire brush and see how bad it is... any perforation and its not really viable to repair...

Treat it with some rust "converter" and paint with a rest preventing paint.. then brush it with waxoyl or similar... Oh worth replacing any of the rubber breather pipes on there too you need 5.6mm (IIRC) NOT 6mm or 1/4"... 5.6mm is Fuel injection hose available at most good motor factors..
Worth checking the filler rubber connector too
