Engine stalling / poping.

I've got a watercooled 1.9dg with autobox and pierberg

I'm having a few problems, the engine cuts out / pops when its cold.
Its fine when its been run for 20 mins or so and the problem seems worse when its not been run for a day or two.

It usually happens when I'm stopped at lights or slow down at junctions, its fine until I put my foot down, then the battery light comes on and it stalls, sometimes takes a while to start again leading me to think that the problem is carb related. Also when going up hills if I put my foot down the either the revs drop and it stalls or the engine pops (misfire).

I've checked the choke pull down, stripped / cleaned the carb, changed the distributor cap, spark plugs, air filter. I've turned the idle up a touch which has helped but not cured.

any ideas?

hmmmmm, I changed the fuel filter not that long ago, but before this problem started so it might be worth getting a new one on.

I like the idea of a vacuum leak as I've already had to replace the fuel hoses due to perished rubber, I assume the smaller hoses around the carb need the same treatment. what size are they?

wouldn't know where to start regarding ignition timing, steve at gassure?

check brake servo vacuum hose is not perished (common) take it off and fill it with water ...mine looked looked a watering can
the one way valve is there too make sure it does just one way
Check Vacuum hose connectors and the pull down tube
combined with the gasket being "pooh" between the carb halves...we were sucking in lots of air

As for timing you need a timing light to do it accurately and all the marks are on the pulley wheel with the procedure in Haynes.

that is simply the choke not working
either the setting spring is bust or the unit has moved on the adjusters

I thought it was the choke too but I've checked the spring is OK and the lines are definitely lined up so it should be in the right place, hmmmmm.

changed the gasket on the carb when I cleaned it up. will have a look at the hoses at the weekend.

does the choke "set" when acc is depressed from cold?

top off the carb and set the choke to check

OK, just checked the choke,

took top off carb, pressed acc, choke flap goes to a closed possition,
start engine, open throttle, can see small choke flap opening to let air in - no problems.
I can see that the large choke flap slowly opens as the engine warms up - no problems.
I continue to open throttle after choke is fully open, there is a distinct sucking sound coming from the carb, is this normal?

anyway, it looks to me a though the choke is working fine.
I've got the van booked in with steve gasure for an mot / tune up in feb anyway but I'd love to get to the bottom of it.

it did it again this morning at a junction, people cuing up behind me as I'm waiting for the fuel to evaporate. b@lls!
