Head Gasket service

Post by thenaylortribe »

Ok, it's getting near the time for me to do the head gasket on my AAZ..external water leak getting progressively worse form head gasket joint (1 litre every 20 miles!)

My question is where is the best place to get the cam/crank/pulley locking tools for this job?

I know I need a flat bar and feelers to lock the cam and a pin for the crank, but which ones and where from

What do I do about the fuel pump? will I need to reset it afterwards?

When I get the head off I am anticipating having to flat it off on a plate and I'll also check all the manifolds for flatness.

Is it advisable to change any valve stem seals and is it worth changing out all the valves or just lapping the old ones back in if I find no problems?

Thanks...Lee

A flat bar can be used for cam, an 11mm deep socket will do for pump, the crank has no lock, just line the tdc mark up.

Yes replace valve stem seals, valved should be ok, just lap them in. Use a geniune headgasket.

Whilst cam belt is off replace pulley on crank for cam belt and the bolt that holds it on.

In an ideall world yes the pump timing will need setting but alot of people do not bother but its well worth it.

Also expect to see some cracking in the cylinder head, would be worth having it pressure checked before doing anything else in case it`s damaged.
Keep it real.

They all have fine crack between valve seats, these will be fine unless its been overheated or has worn injectors
