I understand you only get one shot at doing the recovery disk thing so make sure you have several disks and keep your laptop on charge! I am just about contemplating bringing my network over to XP from 2K seems about stable now! From the end of JAn you will not be able to buy a system with XP any more. Dell went solo vista but their customers were up in arms so they relented until the Msoft cut off point.

And just to throw something else in the pot here, Vista is definately NOT the way forward. Doesn't matter whether its XP or Vista, sooner or later you end up with a slug and have to start again.
I use 'layers' which means nothing gets installed and clogs up the system with stray dll files etc. Been using Altiris SVS on top of XP for three months now and not looked back. Goodbye crashes and clutter

Its that good, even Microsoft has had to take notice!

Vista and programs only needs 2GB of memory to function. Got off our backs! (XP and programs is happy on 1GB.. Don't know about Apples)Andyvandy wrote:You could have bought an Apple Mac.....![]()
Vista is a nasty little (large) operating system, long may I avoid it!
Andy
You Apple Geeks sure love rubbing us poor guy's noses in windows don't you.

About 1/3 of people I know who bought in the last 2 years have gone Apple... And several who didn't need Windows for workplace. Many who needed to upgrade to went Apple because they didn't want Vista.

RIGHT, im getting fairly pished off with this now. i downloaded the free codec software and i still get the crap about not having a decoder on my system? all i want to do is play dvds + cds and COPY them, why did media player on my old laptop just do what i wanted, with this one i need to a computer tech with 30 years of experience. if bill gates was in the area doin a bit of shopping down tesco, i think would have to punch his teeth down his throat, like he had a mouth full of tictacs

But it's not all Billy boy... Computers have Gremlins in them! If you pi$$ them off, they will make their sole purpose in life to make your life miserable! DO NOT! I say again DO NOT pi$$ off your Gremlins!

You best bet is to not use media player, as has been said use VLC and you will not get pished off anymaore. For copying DVDs that is a whole other kettle of fish. If its your own home movie then it should be pretty straight forward.. however something loke winavi http://www.winavi.com/en/dvd-copy/dvd-copy.htm
will make life a lot easier to make "backups" of your DVD films. HEre is a video on another way to do it http://youtube.com/watch?v=sdQKtxto7C4

I use Nero 6 as my burner and DVD Shrink 3.2. Shrinks a double layer DVD so it can be burned onto a single layer DVD. If Shrink can't copy, I use DVD Fab HD Decryper (had to use it on my 'Cars' & 'Divinci Code' DVDs). Both DVD Shrink and DVD Fab HD Decryper are free. Haven't got any new movies lately so don't know if there's new copy encryption to fight with. I make copies so my originals won't get damaged when being used or loaned out. All CDs in van are copies for same reason.

Didn't know about VLC, but looks like good software. Been thinking of ripping movies to smaller format for storing on hdd instead of DVDs. Need to figure out how small they can be made and still have acceptable quality. My audio library is all on hdd (mp3) and original vinyl/tape/CD stored away.. Sure makes it easy to find to play or make a copy for van.Hacksawbob wrote:use VLC and you will not get pished off anymaore. For copying DVDs that is a whole other kettle of fish.
