Broken plug on electronic dizzy - can it be repaired?

Post by Shipdrives »

1980 2.0l automatic air-cooled

The small electrical connecting plug on the side of the electronic distributor is missing & the wires are hanging out of the unit. Is the plug replaceable? If so where can I get the part? Alternatively, if I need to change the whole distributor, where can I get a new one?

if you buy a new hall sender/base plate (the plate with the pick up sensor on it) for about 30 quid from GSF, it will come with the 3 pin socket on, take yours with you tho to compare , as two different style plugs were used. otherwise you might get one off something like an 80's polo or golf at a scrappers as i'm pretty sure they're the same.

Thanks for the advice - only problem is I don't have the broken bits as the bus is in Spain so it'll have to be photographed & e-mailed.

My son-in-law needs to get the bus running asap so he can bring it back to the UK in February. He had the engine out while he fitted new barrels & pistons (in a friend's car repair garage) when some unknown numpty must've hit the dizzy with something, shattering the plug & snapping the pins off! :x

Second-hand car parts (especially old VW) are very expensive in Spain so it's often cheaper to buy the new bit here & post it.

My son-in-law has taken the dizzy apart, managed to extend the wires, soldered new spade terminals on & plugged the hole with some sort of putty as a temporary repair - fingers crossed that it works...!

Thanks for the help & advice, much appreciated.

make sure any joins dont get in the way of the advance mechanism doing it's job, or make it stick in an advanced state! there aint much room in there for anything other than very thin wires, unless he managed to get all the joins external, which should be fine and dandy.
