winter insulation

i`ve started insulating the westy as irishkeet as done,

and have found it to be a right pain in the a*** to fix the insulation to the door and side panels

so i had an idea.

if i insulated the inside of the door cards and the rear trim cards and then filled the void between them and the outside of the van with either bagged rockwool or polystyrene, would it be as effective as doing it irishkeets way.

i think possibly not

but it would make the job easier

rockwool will retain moisture.and thats a breeding ground for tinworm.i would be mostly steering clear of it if i was you....

polystyrene is not as good as thermawrap
get some strong double sided tape, I also used the insulated foil tape for joining overlapped edges

i`m useing the therotec wrap, lots of it, it`s good stuff done the roof too.

what about bubble wrap for the gap inbetween.

I had a narrow boat in the past. When I brought it was 45ft but I had 21ft foot added. Anyway the new 21ft shell was bare inside so I had it all refitted with timber etc but in narrow boats now they dont use insullation fabric ie foam, fiberglass etc they spray the inside of the steel hull with a type of foam which sticks to the steel and stops any moister getting to the steel. It was a great way of insullating for warm, quiet etc so cant the same type of this be done to the inside of a van?

i`ve been pretty sold on filling the viod with bubble wrap untill i checked the price out. its not very cheap! does this mean its good?

spoke to a mate whos up on stuff like this, well more than me anyway and he says an air gap is important if you`re to avoid condensation which i think is pretty important in a van, so jury is still out at the moment.

What he said, it works well but because it expands so much you will need to trim it back afterwards

a friend has offreed me some loft instilation it is bubble wrap type with foil on one side could i use it in van?

thats pretty much what i`m using, but it wont fill the void as its quite thin stuff.

iv just took the off side interior panel off to see why the joint above the wheel was startin to rust and the rock wool was soaking wet and there was standing water inside the void im considering putting a vent in next to the heat control similar to whats at the bottom of the front doors to let some air circulate? what do you think bad idea?? i definatly wont be puttin that fibreglass rockwool back in tho its defo not the best il be fillin it with cavity wax too

I used a single role of rather expensive £60(ish) space age stuff from the local Focus store. It's made of foil and plastic and wadding and compressed down to 'very thin'. I removed all the Rockwood which was wet were the rot was! That helped then!

Here's what the insulation looks like during insulating the floor.

The insulation was cut to size and joined with ali. Tape. One roll did the most of the van (floor, all side panels and sliding door. Not enough for under the cab mat or the rear and front doors - another roll should do this).. It helped massively with keeping the heat in and we defiantly noticed a difference under foot. It should be even better with the second half sorted and worked out how to stop the draft from the front vents. At some point I'm going to write up and include more pictures on my site (one day!).

Next trick was to splash out on a JK's 8 Piece Thermo Mat kit (£60 full price), not used them yet but nicely made and have high expectations they'll be the nuts!.

So, complete van will be insulated for about £180, worth every penny, IMHO.[/url]

Have just insulated the interior with Thermawrap, have we reached a verdict on whether to have an air gap or not, was thinking of filling some of the void with bubblewrap ? good or bad idea ...
