What petrol to use!

Post by Zimbok »

Firstly Merry Christmas to you all.

Sitting at home having finished my Christmas lunch and feeling the need to get out of the house, I thought let's go for a nice drive up to Brecon for the afternoon and walk the corgi's. However I was reminded that there was very little petrol in the van and Tescos was closed. End of drive to Brecon...full stop. Have to wait for Tescos to open tomorrow!

Now my question. I have a '90 2.1cc Type 25 and have had it about a year now and always fill it up with Tescos "super unleaded", because the guy who sold it to me told me to and not to use anything else :tsk

What do other T25 drivers fill up with? Could it be normal unleaded or does it have to be "premium" or "super" or whatever else.

What else can I use? Any guidance on petrol issues most welcome.

And must of had plenty of ££££££££££

Just the normal unleaded is plenty good enough.

Well said Jason.

Timing should be retarded slightly to run normal unleaded.

:D

the 2.1 has quite a high compression ratio, and is supposed to be run on the higher octane rating stuff, 98 RON super unleaded, (mine still has the original sticker near the cap, so those above who say its "pooh" are talking "pooh" themselves!) but as said above, retard the timing by 5 degrees and all should be fine :)

Cheers all...and same to you Jason. Hope the new van is running sweet now.

I wish the petrol thing was the only issue at the moment.

Went to take it to fill up this morning and the b@%*&rd thing wouldn't start. It tried turning over a few times and then dead. Tried jump leads and nothing. Lights etc. coming on but no life at all. Could be the starter?...someone coming to look at it tomorrow anyway. Spent a small fortune on getting the starter reconditioned in the summer. Hope it isn't that again.

Need to get it up and running as taking it to have a Westfalia highroof fitted soon :rollin

How much is a small fortune? It shouldn't be too expensive. I had my starter motor removed, sent to be reconned & then refitted for £65.00.
That was only a few months ago.

I suppose the price of the recon will depend on the number of new parts needed & the time taken to replace/test them.

just an idea, zimbok, but check the big thick positive lead from battery positive to starter, especially the end terminal at the starter end, mine was hanging on by a few strands and causing starting probs. also the earth strap from batt. to body, they're only a few quid to replace, from any car accessory shop, make sure of good clean metal to metal connections too.

As already said.. you cant just stick 95 in unless you know the timing is retarded slightly... THIS IS ONLY for 21. "DJ" engine codes.. (look at your engine number)

2.1, (mainly) come in 2 flavours.. DJ and MV.. MV will run on crappy old 92 UL (which we dont get) so 95 is fine.. (personally I think the MV would benefit from a slight ignition advance to take advantage of the 95 over 92)

The DJ MUST run on 98/99 if timed to 10 deg BTDC if timed to 5 deg BTDC then 95 can be used...

Is there a 5 deg BTDC timing mark ? Our DJ with DG carb/lpg is timed by eye and is seemingly running nicely on lpg but rough on petrol (95)

If I stick normal unleaded in mine it coughs and farts like an old tramp. I'm 99% sure it's a DJ engine. If I knew how to retard it I'd probably do it but I'm from the school of "don't fix what ain't broke".

I've stuffed injector cleaner in it too in case that makes any difference...
